English Schools Foundation (ESF) Review
Overview of the Schools
Established by the Hong Kong Government in 1967, the English Schools Foundation (ESF) is the largest English-medium international school organisation in Hong Kong. With 22 schools spread across the city (including kindergartens, primary, secondary, and all-through schools) ESF provides international education from K1 through to Year 13, with all schools offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum across different pathways. Over 18,000 students from 75 different nationalities are enrolled across ESF's network.
ESF’s mission is to make world class, English medium education accessible across Hong Kong's diverse communities. Each campus carries its own character and location, but all share a consistent curriculum framework and commitment to academic excellence, inclusion, and a clear IGCSE-to-IB Diploma pathway, alongside strong offerings in sports, the arts, and leadership that prepare students for leading universities and life beyond school.
Academic Strengths
All ESF schools are authorised IB World Schools, offering a clear academic pathway from the Primary Years Programme (PYP) through the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and on to the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) or the IB Careers-related Programme (IBCP) at senior level.
In the 2024 IB examinations, ESF students achieved an average score of 36.4, well above the global average of 30.5, with 97.6% of the 841 diploma candidates earning their diploma, and 17 students achieving the maximum score of 45 points.
The foundation places a strong emphasis on student centred learning, preparing graduates for universities in the UK, Hong Kong, and beyond
Pastoral Care and Community Life
Across ESF schools, student wellbeing is treated as a foundation for learning rather than an afterthought. At schools like South Island, a dedicated Family Leadership Team, comprising tutors, heads of year, counsellors, and medical professionals, ensures every student receives holistic support, with wellbeing embedded at the heart of the school's culture.
At Island School, wellbeing is woven into the curriculum from Year 7 through to Year 13, addressing identity, self-esteem, relationships and life skills, with a guidance team providing confidential support.
Strong parent-teacher associations and active community partnerships further reinforce ESF's ethos that education goes beyond academic learning to help young people grow as individuals.
Co-Curricular Life
Life beyond the classroom is rich and varied across ESF schools. Individual schools offer over 100 after-school activities during the academic year, giving students wide-ranging opportunities to explore new interests and compete alongside peers from ESF and other international schools across Hong Kong.
Offerings span sports, music, chess, coding, debate, digital media, mindfulness, and the arts. Across the network, students compete in regional and international competitions through organisations such as the International School Sports Federation Hong Kong and ACAMIS, giving ambitious students the chance to represent their schools on a wider stage.
ESF Explore, the foundation's dedicated extracurricular arm, extends this offering further, with sports, language classes, arts, drama, and STEM programmes available to children from 6 months to 17 years old, both during and outside of term time.
Why We Recommend ESF Schools for Our Students
ESF stands out as one of the most well-rounded and accessible international school networks in Hong Kong. Its geographic spread across the city means families can find a well-resourced, high-performing IB school close to home, with each campus offering its own community feel while benefiting from the collective strength of the wider ESF network. Academically, the results are consistently strong, and the breadth of co-curricular provision means students develop far beyond the classroom. Above all, ESF's genuine commitment to inclusion, wellbeing, and personalised learning makes it a strong fit for students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles — whether arriving as expats new to Hong Kong or local families seeking an internationally minded English-medium education.
