Canadian International School of Hong Kong (CDNIS) Review
Overview of the School
Founded in 1991, the Canadian International School of Hong Kong (CDNIS) is a respected not-for-profit international day school serving Hong Kong’s local and international communities.
Located on the south side of Hong Kong Island in Aberdeen, it educates over 2,100 students from Nursery through Grade 12, representing more than 40 nationalities. CDNIS is an IB World School and one of only eight IB continuum schools in Hong Kong, offering the full International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes (PYP, MYP, and DP) alongside the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
Fully co-educational, CDNIS nurtures inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring students in a dynamic, inclusive community guided by the IB Learner Profile and a commitment to inquiry-based learning, character development, and global engagement.
Academic Strengths
CDNIS is recognized for its rigorous, innovative academic programme and outstanding success in preparing graduates for top universities worldwide. The school delivers a customised Ontario curriculum integrated with the IB framework, allowing students in Grades 11–12 to earn both the IB Diploma and the Ontario Secondary School Diploma, a unique dual-diploma pathway outside Canada.
The school consistently achieves some of the highest IB Diploma average scores globally (e.g., around 38 points in recent years, well above the world average), with multiple perfect 45 point scorers annually. The inquiry based approach fosters critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and intercultural understanding. Small-to-moderate class sizes, dedicated faculty, and a an all-through structure (Nursery to Grade 12 on one spacious campus) provide continuity, personalised support, and a strong sense of belonging.
Pastoral Care and Community Life
Community and pastoral care are central to the CDNIS experience. The school cultivates a supportive, student-centred environment where every child feels valued and respected. With a vibrant, diverse community spanning more than 40 nationalities, CDNIS promotes emotional well-being, inclusivity, and character growth rooted in the IB Learner Profile.
Teachers, counsellors, and pastoral teams offer individualised guidance, while strong family involvement and daily engagement create a nurturing atmosphere. As a day school with modern facilities overlooking the South China Sea, it balances academic rigour with wellness initiatives, sustainability efforts, and a positive school culture that encourages kindness, resilience, and global citizenship for both local and expatriate families.
Co-Curricular Life
CDNIS offers a rich, well-balanced co-curricular programme that supports holistic development and lifelong passions. Students engage in over 70 activities across sports (e.g., Timberwolves teams competing in ISSFHK and SEASAC leagues, including basketball, soccer, swimming, and more), performing arts (choir, dance, drama, music ensembles), visual arts, clubs (e.g., Model UN, robotics, environmental/SEED club, student councils, service-oriented groups like Habitat for Humanity and UNICEF), and community service initiatives. The school emphasises participation, enjoyment, and excellence through after-school programmes, leadership opportunities, and experiential learning, helping students build teamwork, creativity, and real-world skills beyond academics.
Why We Recommend CDNIS Schools for Our Students
We recommend CDNIS for families seeking a rigorous IB-based education with the added flexibility and global recognition of the dual Ontario + IB diplomas in a vibrant, inclusive international environment.
It suits motivated students who thrive in an inquiry driven setting with strong academics, excellent university counselling and placement outcomes (offers from institutions like Oxford, UCL, University of Toronto, HKU, and more), and abundant opportunities for leadership, arts, athletics, and service. For Hong Kong families (local or expatriate) aiming for top universities in Canada, the UK, the US, Hong Kong, or elsewhere, CDNIS provides outstanding preparation, a spacious south-side campus, and a welcoming, multicultural community without excessive pressure.
