Wycombe Abbey Admissions Guide and Tuition

Wycombe Abbey

Founded in 1896, Wycombe Abbey was established to offer girls an education equal to that of boys, built on the values of excellence, individuality, and pastoral care. Today, it stands as one of the UK’s top girls’ schools, known for its exceptional academic results. Wycombe Abbey attracts ambitious, high-achieving young women with a drive to excel. The school educates around 650 girls, 90% of whom are full boarders. There are three entry points for applicants to the school: 11+, 13+ and 16+.

Since 2008, British Tutors has worked with girls in Hong Kong, Singapore and the region to guide them through the application process and prepare them for success at all stages, including interviews, pre-tests and entrance exams. Our team of UK School Entrance tutors is carefully selected for their experience and expertise in preparing students for their interviews and exams and for their ability to inspire and motivate.

Year 9 Entry (13+)

The same two stage process applies for Year 9 entry.

Stage 1: Candidates sit the ISEB Common Pre-Test online in the Autumn of Year 7.

Stage 2: Assessment Day. This is a key part of the admissions process at Wycombe Abbey, designed to give candidates a real taste of life at the school, while also allowing staff to assess academic potential and how well girls might thrive in the Wycombe Abbey community.

Held on-site, usually in January of Year 8, the day includes:
- an individual interview with a senior member of staff
- Entrance Examinations, which include papers in English, Maths, Humanities, a Modern Foreign Language (choose from French, German, Spanish, or Mandarin Chinese) and a practical Science assessment

Firm offers, waiting list places, and scholarships are awarded in January.

How hard is it to get a place at Wycombe Abbey?

Admission to Wycombe Abbey is highly competitive across all entry points. While for Year 7 there are 80 places available, this reduces to 20 available places at Year 9 and Year 12, and entry to the school gets more competitive the higher up the school you go. The acceptance rate for Year 7 is approximately 27%, whereas for Year 12 it is only 11%.

It is important to remember that academic excellence is only one facet of what the school is looking for. Ultimately Wycombe Abbey is looking for exceptional potential in all it’s successful applicants and for students who will want to be active and well-rounded members of the school community.

Year 7 Entry (11+)

Wycombe Abbey has a 2 stage entry process; candidates who are successful in the first stage are then invited to attend stage two.

Stage 1: Candidates sit the ISEB Common Pre-Test online in the Autumn of Year 6.

Stage 2: Assessment Day. This is a key part of the admissions process at Wycombe Abbey, designed to give candidates a real taste of life at the school, while also allowing staff to assess academic potential and how well girls might thrive in the Wycombe Abbey community.

Held on-site, usually in November of Year 6, the day includes:
- An interview with a senior member of staff
- A group activity session to observe interaction and teamwork
- Written assessments in English (1 hour) and Maths (1 hour)

Based on the assessment day and a report from the applicant’s current school, successful candidates will be sent offers in December.

Sixth Form Entry (16+)

Wycombe Abbey welcomes bright, motivated students into the Sixth Form each year. Successful applicants are typically expected to have achieved at least six GCSE/IGCSE/ GCE passes at grade 9–7 (A/A*), although most girls significantly exceed this minimum. Candidates must register for the school by 1st June of Year 10.

Stage 1: UKiset Assessment

Test results must be submitted between January and July of Year 10.

Stage 2: School Report & Extra-Curricular Summary

By 31 July, candidates must also submit:

  • Their Summer Term school report

  • A brief summary of extra-curricular interests

Applicants will be informed by September if they are invited to proceed to Stage 3. At this stage, the registration fee is required.

Stage 3: Entrance Exams & Interview

In November of Year 11, shortlisted candidates will:

  • Sit entrance exams in their four chosen A Level subjects (based on GCSE syllabuses)

  • Attend an interview with a senior member of staff

  • Have their current school provide a confidential reference and predicted grades

Conditional offers are made by early December, and places must be accepted, with a deposit paid, by the second week of December.
